Helmut held a sample sale this weekend which lasted from Wednesday up until Sunday, 6pm. The shop [on Mercer, corner of Spring] gathered a neat tight line of beautifully diverse and stylish women. Not to dissuade hopeful shoppers, the line went quickly and was well managed by the friendly doorman satisfied with the crowd he welcomed in. Upon entry racks were filled with latest season’s surplus. Nothing unworthy, a Helmut Lang piece is timeless and fits like a glove no matter what season of purchase. I was consumed eyeing their jackets and blazers on the right. The first rack contained amazing iconic leathers which flashed me back to Madonna’s, Desperately Seeking Susan [movie] and her expression of personal style. From a jacket to a fashion staple, these leathers create a stand out look or put a new spin on any minimal look. If you’re interested in a calmer piece, more suited for the office, ‘Lang’s more toned-down blazers (in light grey and white) hung right behind. Hungry for prints? Helmet had a beautiful short white and grey blazer, which skimmed the waist and accentuated shoulders like a well-put together Emmanuelle Alt outfit. A woman with structured, well-defined style would j’adore. Back to Desperately Seeking Susan and our 80’s obsessed trends, a black and gold cobra pattern caught my eye. Cropped as well, with the illusion of leather, perfect to use as a signature or to throw over to complete a look. If you are in the market for a new blazer, simple ($199), staple ($169) or leather ($300)- I endorse Helmut’s collection.
On the left held Helmut’s famous body-skimming dresses. Ever look in the mirror and think… [Damn]. The material looks and feels like warm silk and honey; the way it hugs each curve makes you instantly drop a size and spike up in sex appeal. The best is, a dress this proper is fit for any occasion: a dinner, movie, day well into evening. It is the ultimate ‘little black dress’ without the actual and redundant, little, black, dress. After skipping this purchase at full price last month, I was thrilled to bring it home at $119.
The next rack held jumpsuits, knit tanks and sweaters, the peak-aboo top over shorts, a cooler evening at the beach, a shopping trip or a rooftop lunch.
Denim and shorts hung next. The denim, slim fitting jeans elongate any leg. I copped a pair of dark navy legging types, which I will use well into fall $79. The shorts, a black flowy pair that caught my eye looked perfect and relaxed on my frame. Paired with a drapey top or an untucked button down, and some Ibiza Jeffrey Campbell’s.
Almost forgot to mention these wicked pants I tried. Amongst the drop-crotch skinny legs, I found a pair with shear printed fabric covering the legs. Hanging low on the hip, with subdued shorts underneath covering your bottom. So different, so unique, they are the perfect, fresh addition to your closet.
Sample sale fitting rooms are all the same, but the line went quickly. There were so many pieces I adored, I took my time and went in twice. My only suggestion for the communal narrow space would be more mirrors. This one girl hogged the mirror as she would in her own bedroom - c’mon girl, can’t we all just get along?
On to the shoes, they had a cool pair of white and black sandals you could dress up or keep casj, depending on your style. But at $290, I skipped out.
My selections rounded roughly to $200, which amazingly rewarded me a free $90 bra, plus this tip: Helmut Lang to launch a men’s line in January 2014!
Thanks Helmut Lang. Xxo
